Handl – From a Local Inn to a Hotel
- In 1887, Jakob Steixner purchased Handlhof, formerly known as Bierwirt. Livestock and lumber trading, card playing and the regulars' table were all a part of daily life at this guest farm and inn.
- Until 1960, the grocer's store at Gasthof Handl sold everything from shoelaces to kerosene, flour, and sugar– all the things one needed for daily life. The name “Handl” refers to the trade of food products and agricultural commodities.
-
By 1965, Hans and Maria Steixner had re-established the hotel business, which was necessary with the expansion of Stubai road. The general store was moved to the middle of the village of Schönberg.
-
In 1979, Hermann Steixner took over the family business at the age of 21. Together with his wife, Agnes, he re-purposed the agricultural section and renovated the hotel to accommodate 25 beds.
-
After purchasing neighbouring Maurerhof, the two buildings were connected by a bridge structure in 2002. This enabled the hotel to offer a seminar facility as well.
-
Their children, Johannes and Teresa, completed their six-year training program at the Villa Blanka Tyrolean School of Hotel Management and were also able to spend time learning abroad. Even Tobias, the youngest, decided to attend a school for tourism management.
-
In 2017, Johannes Steixner, now head of the family business, followed in the footsteps of his father. Fuelled by passion and creativity, he offers all his guests "the best from the kitchen and cellar", using mainly regional products in his cuisine.
-
His sister, Teresa, takes care of guests even before they arrive, at the reception desk, and of course throughout their stay. And Teresa's children add that touch of family to Handlhof.
-
Teresa and Johannes Steixner are the fifth generation of the family to ensure their guests experience real hospitality during their stay at Handl.
